looking at recent photos and just driving around, we are all living in a rubbish dump. Litter is literally everywhere, some of it is just thrown out of car windows onto our roads and motorways, some will get blown off lorries, dust carts, and roadside bins, but there is a lot of it. Across the country there has also been an increase in fly tipping incidents.
If you come across an excessive amount of litter either along the side of a road or a case of fly tipping, please be proactive and contact your local council to report it. They can then send out a cleaning crew or start an investigation in the case of fly tipping. I must ask the question. Are we all getting complacent?
The rubbish found along our roadsides and verges can also be detrimental to wildlife. They can eat it, get stuck in it, or get injured by all this stuff that we just throw away. Also, it doesn’t look very nice, have we lost pride in our communities?
Keep Britain Tidy has been going since the 1950s. As an independent charity, its three goals are, to eliminate litter, end waste and improve places. Keep Britain Tidy is holding its annual Great British Spring Clean from 22nd March to the 23rd of April. Councils across the country are teaming up with Keep Britain Tidy along with thousands of volunteers turning out to clean up everyone’s mess.
If you are interested in getting involved, either, have a look at the Keep Britain Tidy website or get in touch with your local Council. If your road needs a tidy, why not get a few people you know, contact your council for equipment and bags, and get out and have a good litter pick. Show your community you care. If one small group can get going you might be surprised how many more people will want to join in.
Also, if you want to get involved in a litter collection team you will find many small groups of people getting together to do litter picks in your community, contact your local council, or do an internet search for your area to find a local group.
Is there room for a tree on a street near you, if so, to sponsor a tree, have a look at treesforstreets.org fill out the form and they will contact your local council on your behalf. Your council should contact you in return.
