Grow Your Own

Grow Your Own

Last year I decided to grow a few vegetables. I also invested in some fruit trees which grow in large pots. These are, an apple tree, pear tree, cherry tree, and a blueberry bush.

The vegetables I grew last year were, tomatoes, cucumber, and salad leaves. This year I am growing, new potatoes, tomatoes, courgette's, pumpkin, cucumber, radish, salad leaves, herbs, sweetcorn, and strawberries.

I am not digging up the garden though, I am using containers of different shapes and sizes on my patio. Yes, I am having to purchase compost bags which unfortunately are plastic, but I am not throwing the bags away, they are being used elsewhere in the garden, weed suppressors in my flower borders is one example. I have a composter, and I have started filling it with garden cuttings and peelings etc.   I am sure you have some containers which can be used for various veg seeds, have a go, you might find a new hobby, particularly when farming methods and the air miles of some vegetables are being questioned.

Is there an answer to the compost bag problem, apart from using your own composter, is there an alternative and how can we get our garden center's to implement it?  Let me know the answer to that one.

Castile Soap is one of my favourite refillable products I use in the home. It can come in the form

Castile Soap is one of my favourite refillable products I use in the home. It can come in the form of a bar of soap or in liquid form. Castile soap is named after the Castile region of Spain and has stood the test of time. The original soap was primarily made from olive oil, but today it is made from a variety of vegetable oils.

Net Zero is a hot topic across the media and TV, but it can all be quite confusing with different ways of implementing and interpreting this law.
Trees and ponds are an important part of the eco-system

Woodlands. When the world was young and the UK was coming into its own, our whole country was covered in woodlands as far as the eye could see.
The Rubbish On Your Doorstep

Looking at photos and driving around, we are surrounded by litter. Along our roads and motorways litter is everywhere. It is also detrimental to wildlife. They can eat it, get stuck in it, and die from it. Find a local litter picking group in your area and do something nice for your local community and the natural world.

Your Journey to Zero Waste
By hello 17 Aug, 2022
Don’t be fooled, not many households can achieve absolute zero waste, but taking this journey will and can be your contribution to the mess that big businesses have got us into. The tide is slowly turning, but perhaps not quickly enough to stem the flow of the mountains of plastic, which is always travelling around the world. Crazy. Yes, this situation is not solely the problem of the UK, yet again, we need to lead the way, in showing that freeing our lives from single use plastic is possible. Without restricting our quality of life.

Find Your Nearest Refill Shop
By hello 29 Jun, 2022
Find your nearest refill shop in your area. I have started to use refill shops. It will be a gradual thing because like you my household still has various existing toiletries and cleaning products to use up. No more will I be buying single use plastic toiletries and cleaning products. I have started with hand wash in a pump plastic 1000ml container. Yes, the container is plastic, but it will last for years as apposed to single use and using glass bottles in a bathroom is a major hazard. The other products I have purchased is shampoo and conditioner, also in a 1000ml plastic pump action bottle.
